Every year I promise myself that I will take a family photo during the summer that will be worthy enough to grace the front of our family’s holiday card. And every year (until last year) I break that promise. We are still working on this year… So, if you, like me, haven’t been organized enough to tick the holiday family photo off your to-do list, here are 9 tips to help you get a photo that is picture-perfect.
1. Set the stage. Have a plan before drag everyone into the studio. Pre-Consultations are the perfect opportunity to tell me your ideas. From formal studio shots to something on your front porch, we can craft that ideal portrait with just a few minutes of planning.
2. Dress for success. Don’t wear crazy prints or patterns (they distract the eye) and avoid wearing white or black (both will make you look bigger than you are). If you are doing a full family photo, you will want to be coordinated but not too matchy. Choose clothes that are classic, comfortable and neat.
3. Reward happy smiles. Kids have a short attention span when it comes to photo-taking — as does your family pet. Make sure you have treats to tempt them with after picture-taking is over.
4. Light it right. I love taking portraits either early in the day (I prefer this time because usually kids are well-rested) or in the late afternoon. The result will be softer and more natural. Taking pictures midday, when sun is the brightest can cause sensitive eyes to squint even in the shade.
5. Get close and personal. Even if you aren’t the snuggliest of families, this is a good time to get close and share a group hug. The connection will make a priceless card and a memory you kids will have their whole lives.
6. Enjoy yourself — for real. Here at the studio, we avoid shots that are too posed. I’m very good at engaging families in a way that makes everyone feel comfortable. We try and share a few jokes and stories to help everyone relax but have a few in your pocket to help elicit a laugh. (This is much better than saying “cheese,” which usually leads to a fake smile.)
7. Look your best. If you are worried about your weight, wrinkles or double chin, have no fear: There are small adjustments we can make so you can look your best and TRUST me your lovedones wont be concerned about small flaws only you can see.
8. Quality is found in quantity. Unless your a pro with a family of supermodels, it is likely that you will take a few shots or even poses for the family to relax (even Richard Avedon had to take tons of pictures of Jackie O just to get that one special shot). Plan to take your time with the portrait process and don’t worry I’m especially generous with my time around the holidays. We have plenty of time to get the perfect shot.
9. Go with for the unexpected. Sometimes the best shot is when your busy chatting and you don’t think I’m snapping anymore. I often position the camera away from my eye but still directed at my clients and snap away. It’s then that I can catch you at your most natural.
