Overcoming Portrait Anxiety

Nervous in front of a camera?

I hear it every day… “No, just photograph the children…” “I’m too…” We as human beings are overly critical of ourselves. Women in particular tend to go straight for the things we find most glaring. We use movie stars and models as our measuring stick and endeavor to conform to a version of ourselves that WE THINK society will accept and adore. We must look past that!

Every person that steps in front of my lens is already adored. They come to me already perfect. You child, your husband doesn’t look at you and say you need to change this or that. When your child looks at you they see a beautiful woman, the star of their life. They see a strong man and protector, not someone that needs a gym membership.

The portraits I take of families today will be the memories left behind and trust me your children aren’t looking at that grey streak in your hair.

I remember when my grandmother passed away when I was 19. I remember my aunts curled up in a bed with the only portrait of my grandmother from their childhood. As they passed it among them it wasn’t her slightly crooked teeth they commented on but the joy in her eyes. It was a portrait that spurred memories and stories of my grandmother and it was something they could hold as they cried and said their goodbyes. Copies were made for each of the sisters and they all took grandma home as they scattered across the country… but with those photos when many happy memories and comfort and her wisdom.

So as you make your portrait plans, Have a listen to how to bring your best self to your portrait session and take heart… You are beautiful, strong and loved.
